Abstract

The epilepsy is a widespread neurological disorder characterized by several social, economical and epidemiological implications. GABA and glutamate pathways dysfunctions play a role in several neurological disorders, including epilepsy. It has been established that a detailed understanding of these pathways and the search for new anticonvulsant drugs may provide new experimental and clinical aproaches for their treatment. Recently, some reports have validated the popular use of Erythrina mulungu (Leguminosae-Papilionaceae) flowers hydroalcoholic extract as an anticonvulsant, analgesic and anxiolitic agent. However, data describing about the molecular mechanism involved in these pharmacological actions are poorly known. The aim of this work is to evaluate the "in vivo" anticonvulsant action of the alkaloids erythravine, 11-alpha-hydroxy-erythravine and erythrosine from E. mulungu as well as to investigate the mode of action of these compounds in GABA and Glutamate synapse function by the use of neuroethological, neurochemical and molecular biology tools, therefore, contributing for a biotechnological approach in this issue.
