Abstract

Crustaceans belong to a diverse group of animals, and are found in estuarine, marine, freshwater and terrestrial habitats. Functional alterations during the evolution of this group have led to specialized adaptations of epithelial cells found in gills, hypodermis, hepatopancreas and antennal gland (analogous to the kidneys), where they regulate the transport of molecules and ions between the environment and the hemolymph. Toxic metals can accumulate in the animals through hypodermis and gills, or through the hepatopancreas. This project will study the transport of a metal, cadmium (Cd) and its interaction with calcium (Ca) in isolated cells of hepatopancreas and gills of Ucides cordatus, a mangrove crab, inhabitant of regions vulnerable to metal pollution. The methodology will involve the use of fluorescent markers for Cd (FluoZin 1) and oxidative stress biomarkers, to quantify the deleterious effects of this metal. In this way, this study could be used as a theoretical support for the effects of a metal Cd2+ in interaction with Ca2+, an essential ion for crustaceans, both at the whole animal and cellular level. Moreover, the study of a metal and its transport could help the understanding of the biological potential of crabs as biomarkers of ambient pollution. (AU)
