A biomechanical study of the tensile strength of osteotomies of the tibia of dogs stabilized with plates attached by screws or fork in a procedure of tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA): study in vitro

Abstract

Inumerous surgical procedures have been developed to stabilize the knees of dogs with rupture of cruciate cranial ligament (RLCC). These techniques can be extra or intra-caspulares where the ligament is mimicked to restrict the forces of cranial displacement of the tibia that result in the movement of the drawer. The latest techniques are the corrective osteotomies that promote the stability of the knee without mimic the functions of the ligament, altering the biomechanics of support. The tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) is a technique for correction of RLCC that consist of the tibial tuberosity advancement and cranial displacement of the patellar ligament. In postoperative TTA surgery, the implant failure is reported in 1-5% of the operated limbs, this number was attributed to technical error or the initial design of the implant that was considered weak, so the implant has been subsequently modified. The study aim is to compare the tensile strength of the tibial tuberosity osteotomies stabilized with plates attached by screws (model X-gen - Securos ®) or fork (standard model - Securos ®) through a biomechanical traction after procedure for cranial advancement of tibial tuberosity. Will be collected 15 pairs of hind limbs of cadavers dogs, resulting in 30 tibias. The biomechanical tests will be performed using universal testing machine mechanical Kratos ® model 5002, equipped with load cell of 981 N (100 kgf) at a test speed of 22 mm/min. The strength and deformation parameters are sent to the IBM ®-PC through an analogic acquisition system Lynx ® model ADS-2000 allowing the recording of the parameters for later analysis. The same procedure will be performed with the right and left limbs of the same animal whose crest of the tibia was fixed by screws and fork. Results will be evaluated comparing right and left member of the same animal performing non-parametric statistical tests (ANOVA). (AU)
