Abstract

Many problems can involve the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and its structures, suggesting a temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The aim of this cross-sectional observational study will evaluate the association between facial morphology, type of occlusion, number of occlusal contacts and electromyographic activity of masticatory muscles in adolescents with temporomandibular disorders. Will be assessed all teenagers between 10 and 18 years of both sexes at the Institute of Education José de Paiva Netto (LBV). All participants who are able to participate in the survey, the index will be applied Helkimo for research and diagnosis of TMD. Beyond the specific questionnaire, a questionnaire will be adapted for parents or caregivers respond to the presence of signs, symptoms and predisposing factors for TMD. Clinical examination will be held where, from the clinical findings, the children will be classified in group without TMD, TMD Group Light; TMD Group Moderate and Severe TMD Group. Will get the type of occlusion based on relationships anteroposterior jaw with one another. For the record the points of contact will be carbon AccuFilm Ò II. For the analysis of facial morphology, will be conducted standardized photographs of each participant. Then, patients who submit amendments to the TMD and occlusal contacts will be subjected to electromyographic evaluation of masticatory muscles at rest, normal and maximum intercuspal occlusion. Data will be organized in tables and graphs according to means and standard deviations for each variable and will be subjected to statistical tests (p <0.05). (AU)
