Abstract

Individuals with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) frequently present limitations of masticatory function. Aims: (a) to quantify the mandibular and condylar movements, using three-dimensional analysis; (b) to analyze the electromyographic (EMG) features of masticatory muscles during the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and chewing in TMD patients. Method: Ten subjects with TMD and 10 health subjects without TMD will be submitted to clinical examination, interview and occlusal contacts record. Experiment I: Three-dimensional Motion Analysis: Free and habitual movements of mouth opening and closing will be registered using an optoelectronic three-dimensional movement analyzer (SMART System, E-motion, Padova, Italy), to calculate: the displacement of incisor teeth on sagittal plane and the Cardano'angles in maximum mouth opening, the condylar translation and rotation components, the mandibular movement, the buccal opening and closing velocity and the total duration of masticatory cycle.Experiment II: Electromyographic Analysis: The EMG activities of masseter and anterior temporal muscles will be analyzed using the computerized instrument (Freely - De Götzen srl; Legnano, Milano, Itália), at tasks: (1) MVC with two cotton rolls positioned on the mandibular first and second molars, and a 5-s MVC will be recorded (standardized record). Data analysis: Descriptive statistics will be computed for analyzed variables. The groups will be compared by non-parametric tests (interarch contacts) and by t-test (paired data) motion analysis and EMG variables will be compared by Student t-test. Probabilities of less than 0.05 will be accepted as significant. (AU)
