Abstract

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are disturbances that affect masticatory muscles, temporomandibular joints (TMJs) and / or related structures. The aim of this study will be to evaluate the spontaneous orofacial pain intensity and to assess the pain threshold on masticatory, sternocleidomastoid, and thumb flexor muscles; besides that, to verify the catastrophic behavior and quality of life of individuals with and without TMD. For this, TMD patients will be selected from a target population (convenience sample) of individuals diagnosed with muscular TMD from the Center for Diagnosis and Treatment of TMDs from FOA-UNESP, according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC-TMD). The control group (asymptomatic) will be defined by the pairing technique according to relevant variables (sex and age, etc.) obtained through "propensity score". Spontaneous orofacial pain intensity will be assessed through the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the pain threshold in masseter, anterior temporal and sternocleidomastoid muscles on both sides, and on a reference point (right flexor muscle of the right thumb) will measured by algometry. All participants will answer to the Pain Disaster Scale (PCS) and a quality of life scale (Oral Health Profile - OHIP -14). After collection, the obtained data will be submitted to statistical analysis and evaluation according to the appropriate test using SPSS 20.0 (SPSS, Chicago, IL, USA) with alpha (±) = 0.05. The hypothesis of relation between the study variables (dependent and predictor) will be verified by log-linear models and an Odds Ratio estimated through the logistic regression models. (AU)
