Abstract

Magnetic semiconductors, with a potential for application in spintronics, will be investigated by spectroscopy of multiple harmonics. The same materials will be investigated to establish the ideal conditions for control of the light induced magnetization, which is a consequence of one of two possible processes: (1) instant magnetization, which persists only while the material is illuminated by the exciting light (the inverse Faraday effect); (2) optical spin orientation, which produces a magnetization which persists even after the excitation light has been terminated. The dynamics of these processes will also be investigated. Spin manipulation via the application of electric fields will also be investigated. (AU)
