Comparing the meshes of polypropylene, polypropylene + poliglactin and polypropylene + titanium: early and late tissue inflammation and collagen deposition

Abstract

There are doubts about the inflammatory reaction caused by different meshes in the abdominal wall. In a recent study, it was found that, late, there would be greater tissue response and less collagen deposition on mesh with poliglactin, unlike conventional polypropylene mesh. Objective: 1 - Compare three meshes to pro-inflammatory cytokines, inflammatory reaction tissue and collagen deposition in the early stage. 2 - Correlate this study results with those obtained in the late phase. Methods: thirty rats Wistar will be allocated in groups. In group A, a high-density mesh will be positioned in the abdominal wall. In group B, a low density of polypropylene + poliglactin mesh will be used. In C, a mesh made of polypropylene + titanium will be used. Blood will be collected for determination of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the preoperative immediately, in 1st and 7th postoperative day. Euthanasia will be made on 7th day with a biopsy for histological, immunehistochemical and collagen studies. Expected results: probably, the serum and tissue an inflammatory reaction will be greatest in the high-density mesh and the one containing poliglactin. The mesh containing titanium will probably have less inflammatory process. At this stage possibly collagen deposition will be not significant. (AU)
