Abstract

The Development Defects of Enamel (DDEs) are a common find in the deciduous and permanent dentitions and are frequently associated with higher caries experience. Recently, similar characteristics were observed between demarcated opacities in primary second molars (SPMH) and Molar-Incisor hypomineralization (MIH). The first objective of this study is to determine the prevalence and severity of SPMH among children 4-6 years in the city of Botelhos, MG. In addition, we intend to prospectively determine the relationship between the presence and severity of SPMH with the MIH, in permanent dentition; check the association among SPMH, dental caries and treatment needs in the primary dentition; check association of SPMH with socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of children; and through a retrospective study, the association of SPMH and MIH with prenatal medical history of mother and medical history of children until their first 24 months of life. Children 4-6 years will be evaluated using the criteria for diagnosis of MIH, to obtain the prevalence and severity of enamel defects; caries and treatment needs will be charted by World Health Organization (WHO) criteria. The examinations will be performed at school environment, every six months, for a period of two years or until the complete the eruption of first permanent molars of children. Parents will respond to the socioeconomic questionnaire. Data on health of mother and child will be collected through prenatal and infant cards. Data will be tabulated and analyzed using Poisson regression and relative risk in SAS sofware. All tests will consider the significance level of 5%. (AU)
