Abstract
Langerhans cells are the better studied dendritic cells in tegumentary leishmaniasis (TL) tissue reaction. However, other dendrocytes (factor XIIIa+ dermal dendrocytes) and plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDC) may be involved in the tissue reaction of TL. These cells are involved in promoting innate and adaptive immune reaction to the parasite, as well as inducing tolerogenic mechanisms. In order to verify the involvement of dendritic cells, as well as of elements related to the immune regulating mechanisms, in the tissue reaction of American tegumentary leishmaniasis skin lesions, this project is intended to demonstrate and compare iNOS expression of factor XIIIa dermal dendrocytes and macrophages iNOS expression; the participation of Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase-expressing plasmacytoid dendritic cells (tolerogenic dendritic cells) and FoxP3+ lymphocytes (T regulatory lymphocytes).
