Abstract

Research with female athletes, is very important to prevent risks to health inherent to gender including musculoskeletal lesions, osteoporosis and reproductive disorders, conditions affected by factors that influence the menstrual cycle. The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of cytokine production, oxidative metabolism and pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS) in muscular performance of female athletes. Sixty (60) football players with and without premenstrual syndrome with age between 14 and 25 years old will participate in the study. To determinate the incidence of pre-menstrual syndrome in this group, a questionnaire constituted from 17 questions about menstrual cycle (Daily Symptom Report- DSR) will be applied. In addition, blood samples will be collected to determinate the cytokine production and oxidative metabolism. We will also assess the relationship between muscle resistance, cytokines and oxidative stress in both groups, athletes with and without PMS. The clinical relevance of this study is to establish the importance of pre-menstrual syndrome in the capacity of athletes to practice physical exercises in the presence of PMS and if the mechanisms involved are influenced by cytokines and oxidative metabolism. So we will be able to help the female athletes with pre-menstrual syndrome. (AU)
