Population genetics and phylogeography of the Cereus fernambucensis species (family Cactaceae; tribe Cereeae)

Abstract

The Cereus fernambucensis species (Family Cactaceae; Tribe Cereeae) is endemics of the Mata Atlântica Domain and it has broad geographic distribution through Brazilian Atlantic coast. There are two allopatric subspecies described for C. fernambucensis species: C. fernambucensis fernambucensis and C. fernambucensis sericifer. The population from the former occurs in dunes vegetation (mata de restinga) since Rio Grande do Norte state to the south of São Paulo state, while the populations from the later grows in rock fields (campos rupestres) found in Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais Brazilian states. In the present project we aim to understand the population structure and phylogeographic history of the C. fernambucensis species using as molecular markers two intergenic spacers of the chloroplast DNA. The data generate could contribute to: 1) to improve the understand of the evolutionary history of C. fernambucensis species; 2) the proposition of conservations strategies for C. fernambucensis species with, for example, the description of Evolutionary Significant Units for them; 3) the discussion about the different hypothesis to explain the high endemism rates in Mata Atlântica; 4) the discussion about the causal effects of the climatic changes fluctuations of Quaternary under the geographic distribution of the Neotropical taxa.
