Abstract

Ocular prosthesis are responsible not only for the recovery of aesthetic but also for the self-esteem of the wearer. The current techniques used to fabricate ocular prosthesis should promote perfectly aesthetic and consequent dissimulation of the facial defect. The lack of such characteristics indicates the fabrication of a new prosthesis, even though a good fit is observed. Furthermore, it has been known that color instability due to polymerization procedure and clinical use compromise the longevity of ocular prosthesis. Therefore, the present study will investigate the color change of different painting techniques of artificial iris bottom as a function of polymerization and accelerated aging. A total of 64 samples simulating ocular prosthesis will be fabricated and divided into 4 control groups (n=1) and 6 experimental groups (n=10) according to the following techniques: painted black discs (control 1), inverted ocular caps (control 2), painted black discs with glaze (control 3), inverted ocular caps with glaze (control 4), inverted painting technique without glaze, conventional technique without glaze, prefabricated cap technique without glaze, inverted painting technique with glaze, conventional technique with glaze, prefabricated cap technique with glaze. All samples will be submitted to the accelerated aging, and color measurements will be performed by using a visible ultraviolet reflection spectrophotometer, using the CIE L*a*b system, before and after polymerization, and after 504 and 1008 hours of accelerated aging. Data will be statistically analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's test (p<0.05). (AU)
