Spatial analysis of the occurrence of American visceral leishmaniasis in São Paulo State, Brazil

Abstract

The first occurrence of an autochthonous case of a human American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL) in São Paulo state was on 1999, and, after this, its occurrence area expanded, principally, in the west region of the state. Objectives: to describe, in time and space, the AVL's occurrence in the state; to evaluate the relationship between AVL incidence and socioeconomic, demographic, environmental, and landscape use and occupation variables; to identify risk areas of AVL's occurrence. The study areas are: Araçatuba, Bauru, Marília e Presidente Prudente regions, between 1999 and 2010; and São José do Rio Preto region, between 2007 and 2012. Maps will be produced with the first AVL's occurrences and incidences for the counties of the regions of study. The relationship between the incidences and the independent variables, for Araçatuba and Jales counties, will be analyzed with multiple linear regression and conditional autoregressive spatial models. The clusters of high risk for the disease will be finding with the use of the local indicator of spatial autocorrelation. (AU)
