Abstract

Characiformes, one of the largest freshwater fish orders in the world, is also one of the less studied from the systematic viewpoint. Characidae, the largest family in number of species within Characiformes, comprises 58% (about 1,100 species) of all known species of Characiformes, and is also the most active field in terms of new species description in this order (more than 250 new species described in the last 10 years or about 80% of all new Characiformes described). The recent conclusion through molecular analyses of our thematic project on the family Characidae permitted the preparation of a paper (under submission) in which we presented a new hypothesis of relationship among Characiformes and proposed a new definition of Characidae. Although this study has allowed an enormous advance in our knowledge of the relationships among Characiformes and Characidae, there is still the need of additional studies. Thus, in the present project we intend: (1) to test the hypotheses of monophyletism of large Characidae genera, mainly Astyanax, Hemigrammus, Hyphessobrycon e Moenkhausia based on molecular data; (2) test the hypothesis of monophyletism of Characidae and the hypotheses of monophyletism of internal groups of Characidae, as has been proposed on the basis of our molecular analyses submitted for publication, through the addition of new taxa, mainly not sampled genera; and (3) based on the final results, provide subsidies to characterize the monophyletic groups found and also identify new taxa in Characidae.
