Abstract

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological condition characterized by recurrent epileptic fits caused by excessive neuronal activity, usually auto-limiting. Epilepsies show diverse etiologies and present different types of fit and psychosocial repercussions. Objective: The objective was to study the relationship between clinical-electroencephalographic aspects and spirituality/religiousness in adult patients suffering from epilepsy, accompanied as patients in the Clinical Neurology Outpatients Department of the Celso Pierro General and Maternity Hospital, PUC-Campinas, Brazil. Casuistry and procedures: Sixty adult patients with a diagnosis of epilepsy (20 cases with temporal lobe epilepsy and temporal medial sclerosis, 20 cases with generalized primary epilepsy and 20 cases with symptomatic extra-temporal epilepsies) will be evaluated, carrying out the following tests: anamnesis and clinical examination, digital and quantitative EEG, WHO spirituality evaluation instrument (WHOQOL-SRPB), the spirituality self rating scale (SSRS) and the religious-spiritual coping scale (RSC scale). The relationship between the clinical aspects, the EEG findings and the data on spirituality/religiousness will be studied. Parametric and non-parametric tests adequate to the situations will be used, with a significance level of p<0.05. (AU)
