Productive potential and management of two non-timber forest products keys in the context of the Amazon Region, the cipó-titica (Heteropsis sp.) and copaíba (Copaifera sp.)

Abstract

Notable is the biodiversity found in the Amazonian forest, that in part remains unknown. There are years traditional communities usufruct of the benefits of intrinsic products of the forest, being source of subsistence and alimentary security. The seeds, fruits, leves, oils, resins, tanning barks, rinds, lianas and roots are some of these products, also assigned as not timber forest products (PFNM's). Generally with low commercial value, in contrast to its versatility and potentials uses, that are great. It come increasing the interest on the part of the government and industries of the most varied sectors.. Causing increase of the search and superexploration of the PFNM's, and thus the risk runs to be decimated of the way. This scene can be different if adequate techniques to the management and a bigger knowledge will be aggregates, so that if it promotes the support of the process. Examples of species that presents economic potential, social and environmenmt are the Heteropsis sp (titica liana) and copaíba oil (Copaifera sp). From the titica liana (Heteropsis sp.) a long fiber comes, of clear coloration, resistant and flexible. It is used in the confection of furniture, baskets and other devices. Hundreds of ton of this fiber are commercialized annually, and great explored part of irregular form. Little knows on its ecology and the correct way to management (harvesting). Regions where they occurred of course, populations of this species had been reduced. In case that similar it is of the species Copaifera, of where if it extracts an oil, with medicinal properties, from perforations in the trunk. In the past the tree was cut. In this way, this objective project to contribute in the definition of better forms of management and to infer on the potential of the Heteropsis sp and Copaifera sp species. (AU)
