Abstract

The Brazilian Amazon has the richest biota in the world and its exuberant sociodiversity, including hundreds of indigenous ethnic groups and traditional communities, possesses valuable knowledge on how to use and manage environmental resources. Combined with solid scientific knowledge, these assets represent relevant potential both to face current dilemmas (such as environmental degradation, deforestation and unsustainable forest exploitation), as to unveil nature-related opportunities (such as bioprospecting, development, commercialization and global marketing of Amazonian bioproducts). Regional development of inclusive production chains based on a rich set of plant species with high bioeconomic potential may help to overcome current problems and offer sustainable solutions for the "standing forest" maintenance, including, for example, the production of phytomedicines. In this context, this research proposal seeks to contribute to a better role for the Amazon Region in the technical-scientific advancement and production of phytotherapeutics, overcoming the fragmentation of some initiatives in this direction and promoting medicinal plants of the Amazonian biodiversity. Particularly, this project presented by the interdisciplinary and interinstitutional research team - a partnership between INPA (AM) and DPCT/UNICAMP (SP) - aims at developing a participatory methodology for technical-scientific and productive prospecting and prioritization for the Amazonian phytotherapeutic productive chain integration, including sustainability criteria which are in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, among other initiatives. Based on a technological foresight approach, the proposed methodology will include methods such as a panel of experts, a technical-scientific and productive skills mapping, an international benchmarking of experiences, and will be evaluated and validated through a pilot study of an Amazonian medicinal plant to be prioritized, with the identification of gaps and opportunities in productive, technological and market activities, involving the different chain actors in the phytoterapeutic production chain. The proposal is aligned with the Biodiversity Route Project - Polo BioAmazonas, of which INPA is one of the participants, and, among others goals, aims to meet the demands of SUS (National Health System), in compliance with the National Policy of Integrative and Complementary Practices, and with the Policy and the National Program for Herbal Medicines and Phytotherapeutics. Further expected results include the establishment of sustainability criteria to support the proposed research goals, the strengthening of ST&I planning and management competencies of the involved organizations, the training and qualification of human resources for S&T systems in both Brazilian States, and the closer cooperation among institutions of Amazonas and São Paulo States.
