Abstract

Scientific research in economics has advanced and has benefited greatly from the increasing availability of data and information in terms of scope, diversity, disaggregation, and periodicity, with an emphasis on microeconomic and georeferenced data. As an illustration, we cite the data and information available from the IBGE, Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, regarding demographics, regional conditions, agricultural activities, industrial activities, the service sector, and Brazilian National Household Survey results, as well as those from the Brazilian Ministry of Labor and Employment (Annual Social Information Report and Employment/Unemployment Reports) and the Brazilian Department of Foreign Trade (imports and exports). At the Economics Institute, research groups and students have access to detailed databases of national institutions (Central Bank, IBGE, Department of Foreign Trade, Annual Social Information Reports, and Applied Economic Research Institute) and of international institutions (Bank for International Settlements, Bureau of Economic Analysis, Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, European Central Bank, Federal Reserve, International Monetary Fund, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, and United Nations Development Fund), providing tools to support their research. This proposal underscores the current guidelines and aims to provide greater storage and backup space for research data, ensuring the best conditions for the dissemination, exchange, and sharing of information and experiences among researchers, as well as a significant increase in computational performance, a major requirement for the scientific and academic research currently underway, such as the study entitled “Organizational design of the BIOEN program: intellectual property, incentive mechanisms, assessment mechanisms, and effects”, which will involve analyzing and disseminating the results of various studies. All of these improvements will contribute significantly to the use of econometric and statistical software that are more sophisticated and speed the process of producing high-quality studies (Stata, Eviews, Matlab, SPSS, etc.).
