Abstract

In our contemporary society, among a number of aspects mediating issues related to adolescence, a choice of a profession and the insertion in the labor market became of outstanding relevance. Once having finished high school many youngsters start to work.Previous studies evidenced difficulties associated to the double take: working and studying. The main results of the sudden changes in the routine of the young ones are: increase of responsibilities and commitments, and extended waking hours. Therefore, reduction in the duration of sleep, fatigue and excessive sleepiness are being observed. Conciliating schedules of studies, leisure, familiar and social contacts is jeopardized. In this scene, little is known regarding the changes in the waking/sleep cycle once the young students entered the work market, compared to the previous situation, that is, when they only studied. The aim of this research is evaluate the psychosocial expectations and necessities, as well as to evaluate the social and biological routines, related to the triad education, work and health, of youngsters between 14 to 19 years old, before and after their begin to work. Two subprojects are enclosed in this proposal. The first one is to evaluate the standards of wake/sleep cycles, fatigue and sleepiness; the other aim is to carry out an intervention promoting reflection on work and study and impact of both these activities on their health and wellbeing. The participants of both projects are pupils of a preparatory course for the labor market, a professional learning program sponsored by a NGO, in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. After the completion of these studies we expect to subsidize technical-scientific discussions regarding teen work and its relations with education-work and health. (AU)
