Traces of a city: poor men free, slaves and "poverty business" in Jacareí, SP, in the nineteenth century

Abstract

This research aims to raise conflicts, crimes and social tensions, as well as the list of witnesses contained in the Crimes and Civil Cases in the city of Jacareí during the nineteenth century, with the aim of finding ways to unlock work, supportive relationships and every day the free poor, slaves and freemen of that city. In the company's coffee Paraíba Valley of the nineteenth century, the city of Jacareí had a certain prominence, however was in the condition of an impoverished town, formed by a large contingent of men free poor, small farmers, farmers with few slaves, with economic support as the coffee crop for small and medium property. One question that arises is to ask what extent the multiple tasks exercised by poor free and slave can be considered as "poverty business", generating a culture of solidarity among the region's less fortunate, tone for changes in daily life and restate constant relations established with you and members of the local elite. The extent to which culture, tradition and customs of men, poor free and slave was able to generate a "social capital" of the community benefits, changes in the relations existing in the region of paternalistic Jacareí and Paraíba Valley in the nineteenth century. From the enrollment of the above sources, have also intended to file such Corps Documentary, scanned and posted on the website of the Project Pro-Memory Jacareí agreement among Univap (through the Laboratory for Research and Historical Documentation / IP & D) and the Fundación José Maria de Abreu.
