Crime and the city: conflicts and tensions of daily life in São José dos Campos in the nineteenth and early twentieth century

Abstract

This work aims to raise conflicts, crimes and social tensions as well as the list of witnesses contained in the Crimes and Civil Processes existing in Sao Jose dos Campos during the nineteenth and early twentieth century, with the aim of finding ways to solve labor relations of solidarity and daily free poor, slaves and freemen of that city. In the company's coffee Paraíba Valley of the nineteenth century, Sao Jose dos Campos was in a condition of impoverished town, formed by a large contingent of men free poor, small farmers, farmers with few slaves, with the economic support to the coffee plantation small and medium property.One question that arises is to ask to what extent the multiple affairs exercised by poor free and slave can be considered as "poverty business", generating a culture of solidarity among the less fortunate in the region, theme for changes in everyday life and reworking maintained constant relations with you and members of small local elite. To what extent culture, tradition and customs of poor free men, slaves and freedmen were able to generate a "social capital" of the community, subsidizer transformations within the paternalistic relationships existing in the region of Sao Jose dos Campos and Vale do Paraiba, nineteenth century and first decades of the twentieth century.From the enrollment of the above sources, are also in order to file such Corps Documentary, digitized and made available on the website of Project Pro-Memory Sao Jose dos Campos.
