Abstract

The isolation, purification and microencapsulation of pancreatic islands constitute a promising alternative in the treatment of Diabetes mellitus (DM). This project aimed: 1) to optimize and perfect the isolation, purification and cryopreservation of human pancreatic islands derived from organs taken from donor cadavers; 2) to reconstitute the microenvironment by means of the co-cultivation of isolated islands with cells of the pancreatic tissue, in the absence and presence of the extracellular matrix, so as to maximize its survival and functionality; 3) to microencapsulate the isolated islands using previously designed biocompatible materials and/or new materials resulting from tissue engineering; and 4) to analyze the functional activity of the microencapsulated islands both in vitro and in vivo. The development of this project should permit the creation of products (biomaterials for the production of microcapsules) and processes (technology for the microencapsulation of pancreatic islands), opening up, thus, a new and revolutionary treatment perspective for diabetic patients.
