Digital 3D imaginology applied to odontology: facial characterization of a population of asymptomatic adult subjects

Abstract

The human face has different characteristics according to dental occlusion, facial harmony, orofacial muscles, and the shape and configuration of the craniofacial structures. Thus, the soft tissue facial analysis in three dimensions has been studied, with a variety of non-invasive techniques of facial analysis of 3D reconstruction is offering significant changes in the diagnostic process. Among these the most promising method for evaluating the soft tissue is the stcreophotogrammetry which consists of a group of cameras that capture images from different angles simultaneously, in a very short space of time and the software reconstructs a 3D digital image. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze an anthropometric profile of a population of young adults, aged between 18 and 25, with no symptoms of temporomandibular disorders, defining facial features common to all, outlining a guide of the soft tissue profile of young adults and creating a database of facial myofunctional measurements of a healthy and young adult population, plus test the accuracy and reproducibility of this method. For this, a sample of 50 healthy subjects without signs or symptoms of TMD, both confirmed by clinical dental and following the classification proposed by the protocol of Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders - RDC / TMD will undergo a clinical evaluation of occlusion in the first evaluation session. Clinical evaluation of the stomatognathic function (chewing) will he performed by a speech therapist. After this initial phase, the subjects will undergo facial scanning. For data expressed in nominal or interval level of measurement, such as clinical examinations, will be used non-parametric statistics. The analysis involving only frequency will be used the Fisher's test. For data expressed as interval level scales will be used the Wilcoxon test for paired data on intra-group analysis. Data on facial measurements taken in millimeters, will be analyzed using parametric statistics, being used for the intra-group analysis the t test for paired data.
