Abstract

The performance of procedures that remove smaller amounts of healthy dental tissue, providing greater comfort and less sensibility to pediatric patients is an aspiration of Dentistry. Thus, this study aims to evaluate in vivo the effect of Er:YAG laser in the effectiveness and efficiency of partial removal of carious lesions, microbiology analysis of the prepared cavities, clinical and photographic analysis of restorations. Eighty children (n=80) who present at least two active carious lesions with cavitation reaching dentin located on occlusal surface of molars counterparts will be selected. Teeth of each child will be randomly assigned into two groups: (I): Er:YAG laser (250mJ/ 4 Hz to partial cavity opening and partial removal of carious lesions) and (II) conventional method (high speed turbine to remove cavosurface enamel, low speed turbine and curettes to partially remove carious tissue. The efficiency of the partial removal of carious lesions will be evaluated by counting the time using a digital stopwatch. To assess the efficacy, visual and tactile evaluation will be performed with probe on prepared cavity, to which will be assigned the following scores: (A) adequate partial removal of carious lesions, (B) excessive partial removal of dental tissue and (C) insufficient partial removal of lesion. Microbiological analysis of the prepared cavity will be performed through evaluation of presence of Lactobacillus sp and Streptococcus mutans, obtained from zest of dentine. Prepared cavities will be restore employing the system Adpter Single Bond 2/ Filtek Supreme(3M). Clinical evaluation of restorations will be performed by two calibrated and experienced professionals, using the scores: ALPHA, BRAVO, CHARLIE, DELTA, along with photographs of restored teeth, obtained by the same professional, 7 days after the restoration, after final polishing and one year after completion of treatment. The obtained data will be analyzed to choose the appropriate statistical method. (AU)
