Abstract

The public health service in the country is facing a complex challenge today due to an aging population, increased cost for the care of chronic diseases prevalent in old age. Besides the economic determinants of health care for the elderly, another question arises - who and how to care for Brazilian elderly? In cases with no alternative, or the elderly who have no family reference or financial resources, the option is granted asylum. However, institutionalization is a situation that can trigger depression and other psychological disorders, a scenario that can be aggravated by risky lifestyle condition, which added to the chronic diseases that they already have lead to a high consumption of medicines .This study will examine the quality of pharmacotherapy prescribed to a population of elderly residents in long-stay institutions for the Elderly (LSIE), and the association of behavioral characteristics in relation to health and the occurrence of adverse reactions. It will be a study of descriptive, cross-sectional data collection which will be conducted through documentary analysis of medical records of elderly residents in eight LSIE in four cities of São Paulo state, complemented with semi-structured interviews. The data will be analyzed by the multivariated ANOVA. An index correction (p) of less than 0.05 will be considered to indicate significance. (AU)
