The dance as a therapeutic and preventive resource on improvement of depressive symptomatology and cognitive decline on institutionalized elderly: an experimental study

Abstract

The life of an elder on a long term care facility (ILPIs) is, most of the times, characterized by social isolation, loss of freedom and identity, loss of self-esteem and solicitude. These factors, alone, justify the high prevalence of depression (DP) and cognitive decline (DC) on ILPIs. Insertion of dance in this context seeks significative improvement to those cognitive symptoms for institutionalized elders. Objetive: Analyze the effect size of dance in relation to symptoms of depression (SD) and cognitive decline (CD) in institutionalized elderly. Methods and Procedures: This research will be developed from experimental design with repeated measure on one group of 12 institutionalized elderly of both sexes. The study will be developed in two phases: initial (M1), in which subjects are selected and assessed for symptoms to DP and DC and M2, with will be applied intervention os dance activity (M2),once a week, for six months and reassessment. The following instruments for data collection and evaluation will be used: 1) Formulary of Socio- Demographic and General Health Laboratory of Cognitive Neurosciences'; 2) Mini Mental State Exam (MEEM); 3)Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS30).The score of MEEM and GDS30 will be taken as dependentvariables:VD1= Symptomatology for DP and, VD2=indicative index of DC. The quantitative data regarding the tests will be analyzed by SPSS database and, from them, will be evaluated the interference or not of the activities developed, in terms of: a) cognitive performance/cognitive decline and, b)symptomatology for depression. The summary of the figures will be through tables, geraphs, number of subjects, median, quartile 1, quartile 3,minimum and maximum values. To compare the test times of posts market the Wilcoxon and the effect size of the intervention will be used will be measured by the Pears on correlation coefficient.
