Effect of the treatment with sinvastatin on bone healing process of femoral fractures in animal models with osteoporosis

Abstract

Osteoporosis is a systemic condition that may appear with age advancing, especially in female. This pathology, significantly affects the quality of life, providing bone fractures and becoming the patient victim of many complications due to these fractures. Despite the success of drugs that inhibit bone resorption, there is a need for anabolic agents that increase bone formation in people who have already suffered significant bone loss. In this context, several materials are analyzed about its benefit in healing of bone lesions and, most recently, the drugs that inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins), originally used in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, but with the potentially beneficial pleiotropic effects on bone repair, especially in debilitated bones as those affected by osteoporosis.Therefore, we propose a model in this project with an oblique fracture containing stainless steel wire in the femur of osteoporotic rats, and considering the recovery of this fracture we intend to analyze the phases of bone remodeling in several histological, radiological and biochemical aspects, to determine if in fact, sinvastatin, representative group of drugs named statins, high-turnover commercial and routine use by more diverse group of people, acts positively on the recovery of bone fractures and, more specifically, which in their interaction with the biochemical markers of remodeling.
