Abstract

Leprosy is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, endemic in many developing countries, including Brazil, which ranks first in number of cases worldwide. Oxidative stress has been considered an important condition seen in patients with leprosy. It is important that this kind of stress is detected early because it can produce deleterious effects and damage the treatment and rehabilitation (where appropriate). Likewise, the detection of low levels of antioxidants allows a nutritional intervention through supplementation or diet specific. Hence, the objecitve of the present study is to evaluate the oxidative stress in patients with leprosy, in the forms paucibacillary (PB) and multibacillary (MB), by quantifying markers of lipid peroxidation and antioxidants in serum of these patients. Will be quantified the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), reductase glutathione (GSH; Vitamins E and A; minerals copper (Cu), magnesium (mg) and Selenium (Se). The results will be evaluated for appropriate reference levels; compared between groups of patients with PB and MB leprosy, and analized for relationship between markers of oxidative stress and antioxidant levels.
