Environmental performance evaluation of sugarcane mills located in the basin of the Mogi Guaçu River

Abstract

The sugarcane agro-industry, despite its tradition and its importance for the Brazilian economy, has been the target of criticisms and concerns regarding the negative environmental impacts that their processes result to the environment. The sector is governed by a series of laws with the purpose of regulating their activities aimed to preventing and minimizing the environmental impacts of their operations. This is because it is an industry that strongly demands natural resources, both as sources of natural inputs as depositories of production waste. Thus, under pressure from society by the adoption of environmental models more appropriate to comply with environmental regulations or even by the strategic opportunity of differentiation, the sugarcane mills are adopting environmental practices in order to improve the environmental performance of their production processes. In this context, the purpose of this research project is to analyze the environmental performance of production processes of sugarcane mills located in the Basin of Mogi Guaçu River. For this work of analysis will be produced a methodological framework for assessing the environmental performance specific to this sector. Next, it will be performed data collection in field for the later stages of analysis and discussion of results. (AU)
