Abstract

Leptospira strains characterization is essential for a better understanding of epidemiological behavior of acute disease in humans and animals, and the installation of renal carrier status in different animal species. The genotypic characterization of strains through multilocus sequence typing have been considered nowadays as gold standard in bacteria subtyping, because it presents lower variation inter laboratory comparison. The purpose of present study is characterize the strains of Leptospira isolated from domestic, sinantropic and wild animals and humans, from different geographical regions of Brazil, during the period of 1961 to 2008, through MLST and pulsed field electrophoresis. The strains were preserved by Laboratório de Zoonoses Bacterianas do Departamento de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia da Universidade de São Paulo. The results will permit besides the complete characterization of this important collection, identification of new species and serovars that could not be characterized through serological methods, comparing MLST results with PFGE characterization.
