Abstract

The conventional researches about the modal option for the bicycle are generally based on the utility theory, considering that the individuals choose the better mode of transport available, evaluating cost, time and the effort required for the trip. These studies analyze the determinants of the option for the bicycle, considering several factors as, for example, the traveler's socioeconomic characteristics. What the studies do not explain is why individuals with similar characteristics make different decisions about using or not using the bicycle for utilitarian trips. In fact, it has been being verified that there is a complex interaction between several factors when an individual makes a choice: beliefs, values, emotions, attitudes and other personal characteristics. In this context, the objective of this research is to identify, using the Theory of Planned Behavior, the factors that influence the option for the bicycle a mode of transport. The premise of the study is that, by better understanding the relationship between individuals' attitudes and their intentions and behaviors regarding cycling, one can define better strategies for encouraging the use of the bicycle.
