Eating behavior of Brazilian university students

Abstract

Objectives: i) to estimate the impact of motivation to exercise, of life satisfaction, lifestyle, emotional stress, and elements associated with body image (the influence of sociocultural questions on body image, body satisfaction, and body image avoidance) on eating behavior among Brazilian university students; ii) to estimate the impact of body-image-related elements on life satisfaction; iii) to estimate the psychometric properties of the measurement instruments used on the sample (TFEQ-18, EMI-2, SWLS, PEVI, DASS-21, SATAQ-4, BAS, and BIAQ); and iv) to estimate the students' functional performance, body composition and salivary cortisol level based on their extreme food behavior and life satisfaction scores. Methods: Eating behavior will be evaluated using the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire-18 (TFEQ-18). Motivation to exercise will be estimated using the Exercise Motivation Inventory-2 (EMI -2). Life satisfaction will be measured using the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). Lifestyle will be analyzed using the Individual Lifestyle Profile (PEVI), and emotional distress will be measured using the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21). Body-image-related elements will be investigated using different instruments. The influence of sociocultural elements on body image will be evaluated using the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-4 (SATAQ-4). Body dissatisfaction will be determined using the Body Area Scale (BAS), and body image avoidance will be measured using the Body Image Avoidance Questionnaire (BIAQ). The face and content validity of each instrument will be determined as well. Construct validities (factor, convergent, and discriminant validities) will be estimated, as well as convergent validity, divergent validity, and the discriminant criterion validity of the instruments. Reliability will also be evaluated. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) will be performed using the polychoric correlation matrix. The quality of fit indices used will be Ç2/df, CFI, TLI, and RMSEA. Convergent validity will be calculated using the average variance extracted (AVE). Concurrent and divergent validity will be estimated using two-factor correlational analysis between the factors of the different instruments. Discriminant criterion validity will be estimated using multigroup analysis with the chi-square difference statistic. Reliability will be evaluated using Composite reliability (CR) and internal consistency (±). The factor invariance of the instruments applied to the independent samples will be estimated using the multigroup analysis (”Ç2). To meet the first two objectives of this study, structural models will be created and quality of fit will be determined using the indices known as Ç2/df, CFI, TLI, RMSEA, and RNFI. The significance of the hypothetical causal models (²) will be estimated using the z test (p<0.05). Functional performance will be evaluated using functional neurometrics (BioEvolution® system) and body composition will be determined using bioelectrical impedance analysis. (AU)
