Populational characterization of orchid bees (Apidae, Euglossini) from São Paulo State using geometric morphometrics of wings, mitochondrial DNA variability and cuticular hydrocarbons

Abstract

The current pollinators decline, especially bee populations, is a serious global problem which demands efforts to monitor its biodiversity, conservation and sustainable use. Given the current status of the taxonomic impediment faced nowadays, a key component is the development and application of auxiliary tools that allow us to assess intra and inter-specific variation. The characterization of mitochondrial DNA variability through sequencing of determined regions allow the evaluation of the evolutionary history of the groups and also the haplotypes variation, generating essential data for its conservation. Another very promising method is the usage of computational tools allied to geometric morphometrics analysis of the forewings' venation patterns. Recent data show the effectiveness of the technique in discriminating species, evaluating genetic variability of groups and in differentiating ecotypes. Thus, this project aims the application of the cited techniques in some euglossine bee populations, from several localities in São Paulo state, so we can evaluate the populational variability of the studied groups.
