Abstract

Studies on the behavior of rays and sharks in situ are scarce in Brazil and much of the existing information is based on inferences derived from indirect observations, with the inherent limitations of this method. In this proposal we aim to raise funds for the acquisition and use of unmanned submersible and acoustic telemetry equipment to study the behavior of elasmobranchs on the coast and in rivers of São Paulo state, incorporating new technologies to the existing traditional methods of sampling. The research will be conducted in the Upper Paraná basin (municipalities of Castilho and Itapura) and in the Anchieta Island State Park (municipality of Ubatuba) for understanding important phenomena that occur in these regions, such the colonization of rivers in the west of São Paulo state by rays and the use of certain areas of the north coast of São Paulo state for elasmobranchs as nurseries, feeding sites and refuge. We hope that the use of cutting-edge technology in naturalistic studies allow the registration of undescribed behavior and the understanding of another aspects of the ecology and physiology of several species of rays and sharks, based on data obtained directly from the environment, revealing unprecedented information in the context of ichthyology and scientific diving of Brazil.
