Study of the behavior of temperature, moisture, leachate and its influence on flow rate and composition of biogas in a landfill midsize

Abstract

The research aims to study the influence of parameters: temperature, moisture of the waste and qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the leachate organic matter in the generation and composition of biogas from landfill to a medium-sized municipality, which receives 5,000 tons per monthof the domestic solid waste. The temperature is measured at different depths in the waste mass in order to assess the feasibility of using it as an indicator of the intensity of biological processes. It will be investigated also the feasibility of using the temperature variation in the surface of the landfill as a parameter to identify fugitive emissions of biogas. The data obtained for methane generation in the landfill will be compared with data estimated by applying the model Landfill Gas Emission Model (LandGEM) in order to subsidize the selection of parameter values that make up the model, climatic conditions of Brazil and composition of solid waste generated in Brazil, and with reference values obtained in the qualitative and quantitative characterization of organic part of waste and present in the waste generated in the landfill leachate.
