Seminars on censorship

Abstract

The present work is a selection of essays resulting from the different activities and event organized by the Communication and Censorship Research Group - the internal seminars (meetings set with the members of the Research Group to debate issues related to the theater and the censorship; the open seminars including the presence of an audience; the participation in academic events. We highlight two among the texts selected from the open seminars, the transcriptions of the seminar 1968 - Freedom and Repression, that took place in October 15th 2008, and the international Seminar Communication and Culture, 17th to 20th of august 2010. Some of the texts were written exclusively to this book. We have separated the texts in three main categories: Those on the general concept of censorship, involving many different theoretical perspectives (different points of view, countries, means of communication), case studies (specific aspects of a censorship process or group of processes) and reports on resistance, in which are shown the different ways found by artists to report on the fight against oppression. The only essay that is not related to censorship is the conference given by the Portuguese anthropologist Nuno Porto, regarding the ethnography of archives. It addresses the issue of how archives - based on the bureaucratic need for control - according to a specific perspective become the portrait of a social group from the past Is our intention to inform audiences about the different aspects of our research the censorship and public and to make public the memories we been retracing.
