Detection of Escherichia coli Shiga toxin (STEC) and enteropathogenic (EPEC) in fish from fish farming in the region of Ribeirão Preto - SP

Abstract

The expansion of aquaculture and increased consumption of fish meat make research in this area, especially if related to health and public health, a global trend and need. Although Escherichia coli is not a natural organism of the intestinal tract of fish, it is known that the microflora of these animals is directly linked to quality of water in which they live. Shigatoxigenic Escherichia coli (STEC) and enteropathogenic (EPEC) are pathogens of importance in public health from the potential transmission of enteric diseases to humans and the possible emergence of multiresistant isolates. Based on this, this project aims to detect by PCR, STEC and EPEC strains, and characterize virulence genes of isolates from the gut contents and muscle of fish and fish-farming in the water in which they are created. After isolation, the strains will be subjected to determination of serogroup and profile test for resistance to antibiotics. Also, it will be established an epidemiological link of the isolates by PFGE and phylogenetic analysis by PCR for Chua, and YjaA TspE4C2. The results of this study will be instrumental in helping to understand the epidemiology of E. coli bacteria in fish and to observe the ability of transmitting diseases to humans. (AU)
