Calves welfare: the impact of pain

Abstract

Castration of male calves is a common practice adopted in many production systems, and as it involves an important economic sector, it is constantly questioned about their implications in optimizing the value of these animals at slaughter. These practice improve the carcass and meat quality and change the animal's temperament, but the stress of these procedure motivates the evaluation of several techniques of castration associated with various analgesic protocols to check harmful to animal pain and predisposition to diseases. Diseases such enzootic bronchopneumonia of calves, one of the main causes of economic losses in cattle, are conditions constant after stressful events. The aim of the current study is check for interference on systemic and respiratory tract immune response after orchiectomy. These indicators included pain, discomfort and stress through the measurement of cortisol, a pattern of behavior and attitude and haptoglobin determination. To check the immunocompetence hemogram, functional test blood leukocytes by measuring INF-gamma by lymphocytes, percentage of phagocytosis and production intracellular hydrogen peroxide by leukocytes; and cytological analysis, percentage of phagocytosis and intracellular production of hydrogen peroxide cells in the bronchoalveolar region will be evaluated. If the surgical procedure performed, produce minimal or any animal discomfort, it would not increase the susceptibility to disease, mainly bronchopneumonia. The biology of farm animals will be respected, improving their welfare and the expectations of the consumer market will continue to be achieved . (AU)
