Abstract

The positions of classical ballet are anti-anatomical, fact that generates joint misalignments and inflammatory lesions on dancers. In general, systemic chronic inflammation alters the body homeostasis, resulting in changes in the number/function of leukocytes and decreasing the athletes' performance. Herein, we intend to investigate the time course of the inflammatory process (installation and resolution) in dancers after a ballet class. The dancers will be grouped according to the VO2max, experience of at least 5 years of dancing and frequency of training of at least 3 times a week. It will be evaluated in plasma or serum of dancers before, immediately after and 24 hours after a class: (a) pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a), interleukin 6 (IL- 6), interleukin 8 (IL-8) and interleukin 1beta (IL-1 b), anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-ra, IL-10 and IL-4 (b) markers of muscle damage creatine Quinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), (c) acute phase protein CRP and (d) immunoglobulin A (IgA) and M (IgM). In neutrophils we will analyze the following parameters: (e) cell death (viability assays, DNA fragmentation and externalization of phosphatidylserine), (f) production of EROS and (g) release of cytokines. Cytokines will be quantified by using enzyme immunoassay (ELISA) method, markers of injury will be quantified by spectrophotometry and leukocyte changes will be verified by flow cytometry. These data may help physiologists / therapists / teachers of classical ballet devise strategies for controlling processes that may result in infection and tissue injury, thus improving performance and rates of chronic lesions in dancers.
