Abstract

This project has as main objective to apply strategies of geoconservation of the Geological Heritage of the North Coast of São Paulo as a way to learn, to preserve and to promote this heritage. The region was chosen because of its great natural beauty, where the interest of the general population includes the beaches, the sea, the rocky slopes and the Atlantic Forest, all part of the same environment. In many places, although some rocks from the slopes and trails are well known, both for its beauty or its original form, little is disclosed about their origin, age or processes that led to their formation as we see today, as well as the threats they face.The execution of the project will include bibliographic research necessary to evaluate and to collect information on existing scientific publications, field work, in order to inventory the potential geosites, laboratory work, which include map-making and imaging in GIS environment and presentation of the final proposal, as well as the installation of interpretive panels in geosites chosen according to the proposal. Development of the work will allow the construction of an adequate proposal for the inventory of local geological heritage based on that defined by Brilha (2005) and ProGEO (European Association for the Conservation of Geological Heritage).The procedures being proposed are part of a larger project, included within the actions of the Center for Research Support "Geological Heritage and Geotourism" (NPGeo), created as a result of the recent Call for Research Promotion at the University of São Paulo.
