Abstract

The mechanism of stress is already known and has two stages: acute stress releasing factors and chronic inflammatory and thermogenic seeking suppression of the inflammatory reaction. Abandoned dogs go through this experience sometimes in a traumatic way. When these dogs are housed in shelters, they also undergo a period of adaptation, nevertheless there is no established re-socialization program (RP) for them in order to adapt more easily to their new home after adoption, what decreases the re-abandonment risk. The introduction of re-sociabilization at this time has not yet been evaluated; we hypothesizes RP will be able to reduce the traumatic impact of abandonment and decrease the chance of re-abandonment. Thus, the success of adoption may be improved, reducing the time these dogs stay in shelters. The understanding of animal behavior linked to endocrine and physiological indexes has not been addressed completely. We will work with three groups of 10 dogs each: G1 is composed by owned dogs, G2 by the abandoned shelter dogs, which will not undergo any special treatment, which corresponds to current reality in our shelters and G3 by abandoned shelter dogs undergoing RP. Saliva sampling through swab will occur in daily basis for measurement of cortisol and IL-6. Clinical examination for assessment of physiological parameters will be conducted throughout the experiment. These animals will be tracked by ethograms, the first taking palce at arrivalin shelter, the nexts in two and three weeks and the last one a week after the trial period (G1 - 14 days G2 - G3 and 21 days - 28 days), regardless of dogs having been adopted or not. The collected data will be analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis, Spearman coefficients evaluation for the ethogram data and statistical analysis of variance (ANOVA) and differences will be considered when p < 0.05.
