Abstract

The physical training performed in solo mode is a well established rehabilitation and contributes to improvement of many physiological changes in individual cardiac transplanted. There are none reported study about physical training in warming swimming pool in this population, as well as analysis of body composition and bone formation. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of water based exercise training on bone mineral density, physical fitness, body composition, quality of life and blood pressure of individuals following heart transplantation. METHODS: We will study 55 patients, aged 18 to 70 years, with heart transplantation for 4 at least months, that will be randomized into three groups: Group I (n=20) water based training, Group II (n=20) land based training and Group III (n=15) sedentary control. All groups will perform cardiopulmonary and muscular test, bone mineral and body composition assessment (Dual Energy X-ray absorptiometry), ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, endothelial function and quality of life and satisfaction assessment. Group I will perform a physical training program in a warm swimming pool (48 sessions) with aerobic and anaerobic content, Group II will perform a physical training program in a solo mode and Group III will be oriented to maintain their usual routine. All subjects will be reassessed at 12 and 24 weeks of follow-up. The present study will, thus, supply the needed for studies alternative exercise to the traditional land based exercise commonly recommended for this population. (AU)
