Abstract

During the last years the prevalence of diabetes mellitus has increased and inevitably a greater number of diabetic patients are undergoing anesthesia and surgery. Because of coexisting conditions resulting from hyperglycemia and possible metabolic disorders, these patients need further perioperative care to ensure an ideal control and a better prognosis. Thus this study aims to evaluate the possible acid-base disturbances that may occur during the trans-and postoperatively in diabetic dogs, and establish a better protocol and monitoring for these patients.
