Abstract
Sub-Project 1 entails first estimating a simple Ricardian model relating land values (and net revenue per hectare) to four monthly (September, December, April, June) temperatures and rainfall norms (30-year averages) separately for the 1975, 1985, and 1996 census databases (we will also use 1975, 1985 and 1996 rainfall databases). Tests will be undertaken to see when the land price, temperature-rainfall surfaces actually changed over time. The next step will be to determine whether the introduction of TFP indexes and/or the research stock/extension/schooling variables related to TFP correct for surface differences. Sub-Project 2 will be an analysis of the changing comparative advantages of soybean production. We will examine whether soybean breeders were able to bring soybeans to higher temperature regions {we will relate coverage and production to temperature-rainfall norms). We will also look at other crops. (AU)
