Abstract

The following proposal for the Research Internship Abroad Fellowship is inserted in the context of the FAPESP project (2013/21306-0). Here we propose the untargeted analysis of five commercial species of eucalyptus, generating for the first time an overview about the biomarkers commonly found in these species. This proposal complements the doctoral research project developed by our group in Brazil (targeted analysis), covering a complete study of eucalyptus metabolome. These samples will be subjected to variations of temperature, simulating effects of global warming and geographical distribution in Brazil. Additionally we put forward the creation of our own metabolite database, which will be useful not only for identification of metabolites related to this project, but will contribute for several others projects developed at Plant Biology Department (UNICAMP). The main contribution of this collaboration concerns the data processing using dedicated metabolomics-based software. We highlight that the host institution (Plant Research International - Wageningen University), coordinated by Prof. Dr. Robert Hall, has great expertise in the development of databases and data management strategies specifically for metabolomics datasets. Furthermore, they offer a combination of multiple analytical platforms fully supported by biochemical, bioinformatics and biostatistics expertise (see www.metabolomics.nl), which is not found in Brazilian research centers.
