Dr. Philippe Keckhut’s visit: improvement of active sensor retrievals of cirrus cloud properties using ground base LIDAR datasets at São Paulo city


Dr. Philippe Keckhut is researcher at the Institute Pierre-Simon Laplace (IPSL) in charge of the French NDACC activities. He is in charge of the coordination of the Observing Services and co-head of the research Group Climate, Ozone and Sun at Service d'Aéronomie. Dr. Keckhut has 24 years of research experience in the field of lidar instrumentation and atmospheric climatology, and he is author of 94 publications in peer review literature (H factor: 24). He is involved in teaching and training activities: Ocean-Atmosphere Paris 6 University, European Research Course on Atmospheres (ERCA), ENSTA and supervision of 17 PhD students. He also contributes to setup of a private company (Raymetrics) for lidar design and construction called Gordien Strato (Wind Lidar Doppler). Thus, due to his vast experience, Dr. Keckhut will assist in the implementation of a modeling system through the MSP-Lidar data from IPEN/CLA, helping in the development of an algorithm to identification of cirrus clouds that can be incorporated into radiative transfer models and numerical weather prediction models for South America, similar to one already used by the CNRS (Le Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) in France. In addition, he will take part as examiner on the defense of Eliane G. Larroza's PhD thesis at IPEN, who spent one year in training under his supervision in Paris, France. Finally, he will give lectures in the area of atmospheric physics and cloud climatology for the IPEN and USP scientific community. (AU)
