Abstract

This study will evaluate the effect of exercise program Pilates based on physical and biochemical parameters related to bone health in older women. To reach this goal, there will be a longitudinal study. The study population is 22 individuals, aged 60 years or older, female, enrolled at the Open University of the Third Age University of the Sacred Heart, the city of Bauru. The sample size calculation was performed based on a randomized block design in which the blocking is performed for two times (T1, baseline, and T2, 20 weeks). The two assessments (T1 and T2) will consist of application: a general protocol form, containing general data, demographic and epidemiological health problems, medications, number of previous falls and fractures, smoking and alcohol; physical activity questionnaire, tests of balance, flexibility, muscular strength, quality of life questionnaire. There will also be evaluated serum markers of bone formation and reabsorption. During the period of 20 weeks, participants will carry out specific exercises of Pilates, with a frequency of once a week, each session lasting 50 minutes. The study group will be compared to a control group (not subject to the exercise program), composed of 22 elderly women, matched according to age and body mass index. The data will be evaluated by analysis of variance (ANOVA). (AU)
