Abstract

The evaluation of autonomic nervous system (ANS) disturbances in association with peripheral neuropathies (PN) predominantly sensory, motor or sensory-motor, is important for different reasons. 1) The ANS can be significantly damaged in PN. 2) Monitoring the ANS involvement can be a way to evaluate results of treatment and outcome of PN. 3) The adequate grading of signs and symptoms of NP for scientific clinical investigation needs to include ANS evaluations. 4) ANS evaluation can help the etiological diagnosis of PN. Evaluation of sweat losses associated to PN concerning the entire human body hasn't been studied extensively in the last years. The present project aims to evaluate the sweat losses in NP patients, and it intends to verify the possibility of association of sweat losses and sensory losses including the modalities carried by thin fibers (<7,0µm or less diameter). The sweat losses are going to be compared among different PN. CIDP, PGS, other neuropathies such as diabetic neuropathies (DN), leprosy and others, and healthy volunteers will be evaluated by entire body qualitative sweat test, evaluation of quantitative sweat measurement test (Q-Sweat) and quantitative sensory test (QST). Each one of these groups constitutes a research plan per se but the first two groups of PN (CIDP and PGS) will be compared to the last ones that will be referential for studies of sensibility and specificity. The result of the studies proposed here may contribute for the advance of the knowledge on PN for the reasons highlighted in the first paragraph of this abstract. (AU)
