Abstract

Significant changes have occurred since the 80s for women and gender relations in Brazil, mainly in relation to the greater average educational level reached and on participation in the labour market. According to data from the National Survey by Household sample (PNAD 2007) of 2007, 57% of women were engaged in the labour market (i.e., were employed or actively looking for employment), while this percentage was of 44.5% in 1990. At the same time also several changes happened in the educational and professional qualifications of women. With this increase in female labor market participation, it is necessary a discussion regarding the matter of equality between genders. To analyze these issues, the current proposal aims at carrying out a field research that addresses two main issues:a) the contribution of each Member of the couple despite to household income and the influence of each in family spending decision but also in decisions about the lives of the children and other matters that do not necessarily imply in financial expenses; and b) how it is done the balance in the participation of men and women in the labour market and the care of children and the housework.
